Professor Mark Harvey analyzes the economic development strategy behind the allure of Brisbane 2032 Olympics

On May 21, 2025, the International Training Center (CIE) at the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT) hosted an academic seminar with the participation of Professor Mark Harvey, an international expert in the fields of policy and development communication. The specialized lecture focused on the economic strategy of Brisbane (Australia) in the context of preparing to host the 2032 Olympic Games, offering interdisciplinary perspectives and global directions for PTIT students.

Olympic Brisbane 2032: From a Sports Event to an Urban Development Catalyst

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Mark Harvey emphasized that the Olympic Games are not only sports events but also long-term socio-economic drivers for host countries. Using Brisbane as a case study, he analyzed how local authorities are leveraging the Olympics as a strategic tool to:

Stimulate infrastructure investment and urban redevelopment;

Promote a creative economy and international tourism;

Enhance national image and attract global capital.

Professor Harvey also pointed out that the "hidden goals" in economic development strategies tied to the Olympics are often not realized during the Games themselves, but through the lasting impacts that follow.

21st Century Students: Essential Skills in Interdisciplinary Thinking and Global Competence

During the open discussion, Professor Harvey shared an important message for the student generation in the face of a rapidly changing global economy:

“Young people not only need to acquire specialized knowledge but must also be equipped with adaptability, critical thinking, and the ability to connect interdisciplinary knowledge to proactively seize global career opportunities.”

For PTIT students, this session was more than just a lecture; it was an opportunity to experience real-world learning, blending theoretical knowledge with lessons drawn from international development models.

Enhancing Global Engagement Through Academic Programs at CIE – PTIT

This event is part of a series of international academic activities organized by the International Training Center (CIE) with the goal of enhancing students’ integration capabilities and global thinking. In the near future, CIE will continue to invite scholars from partner universities in the UK, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea to share their expertise at PTIT.

Through international meetings like these, PTIT students gain access to in-depth interdisciplinary topics, ranging from public policy, urban economics, development communication to global strategy management and technology.

CIE PTIT is committed to supporting students on their academic journey, providing access to global knowledge, and preparing them for international career opportunities.
